Finals- Zhang Yin

This space interprets power differently to Slim's space. Here, there is a classical approach to the architecture. The many columns and arches that symbolise power in ancient Greece and Rome are brought back here in an industrial fashion. This assists in conveying the type of business we are dealing with, a resourceful industrial empire that has achieve much power and wealth for Zhang Yin.

Finals- Carlos Slim

Power is achieved through a contemporary and technological approach, it is more metaphoric here. The obvious height of the building resembles many corporate high rises, ornament is null, in a true modernist approach. However, I hear you ask: if there is no ornament, then what are the two arches that run vertically up the building? These arches play on the concept: The more powerful you are, the more enemies you have. They represent a defensive barrier, hence are not ornamental but functional.

Tip

The Staff at the FBE, are seriously the most understanding university staff in the world! If ever you have a problem, big or small, try to speak to them and you will quickly find that they are extremely helpful!

Going Up?

I have spent hours and hours trying to get my initial elevator concept to work in UD ed. Its impossible! well maybe not, but I have tried all the combinations in the settings and it just wont work. I wanted to get both elevators at the same time to lock in at the meeting space in position particular; but I just cannot seem to synchronize the two. So I have come with another design, based on the previous individual elevators.
However, I would have loved to have had my previous concept to work. The idea of both depending on each other and are a little less powerful when they meet seems to have a rather good play on power as a holistic concept.
Nevertheless here are my latest:

Amazing Table Design

Table Design

My dining table design consists of two pentagons merged at their points. I find the pentagon a geometrically strong shape, with clear direction; the pentagon identifies a dominant side with a point on the opposite side, this implies direction.

In the pictures above and the videos below, I have identified two scenarios. The first, a board meeting or business lunch. Slim and Yin sit opposite each other, with the associates sitting on either side, promoting their status and power.

The second scenario is a more intimate arrangement. Slim and Yin again sit opposite each other, but this time at the center of the table; they are a lot closer for a friendlier meeting, or lunch.

Zhang Yin - Development

Zhang Yin's space displays a contrasting view of power to Carlos Slim. Specializing in recycling, Yin built her fortune in collecting scraps. I have chosen to display her fortune and power through more classical measures, such as columns and arches and a pediment staircase. I have also tried to include an industrial or machine like influence to reflect the key to her success.

Elevator Two - Concept for Slim and Yin

I have come with a concept that conveys an element of power that is quite common: What makes a powerful person less powerful? Another powerful person. It may be due to the respect from the opposing powerful person, or just intimidation.

My design consists of both elevators displaying the kind of power its owner has: Yin- a resourceful, more classical or empirical type of power; and Slim- a more modern, technological and corporate status. However this isn't the prime concept.

The elevators rely on each other in bringing its occupant to the meeting space. With out Slim, Yin is unable to attend to the business meeting, and vise versa. This is a gesture of respect, it implies: That unless both people are there, business cannot go ahead, promoting an ethical and moral way of dealing in a cut-throat corporate world.

This is made possible through Architecture. Both elevators have a stair case, however it does not belong to them, but to their counterpart. The staircase cannot be accessed unless the other person is present. This dependence, plays on the idea of varying power, and how financial wealth cannot always provide a life null of reliance.

Elevator One

This is my first elevator design for Carlos Slim. Due to Slim's technology empire, I have tried to encapsulate this ideology into the elevator. The grand scale of the elevator is making a statement in reflecting this man's wealth.

I think I will do another design that is probably less SciFi and with a better concept.

Final - The Ramps

The ramps play a clever role in conveying the Scientists' quotes. However, they have been arranged so that Darwin is reminded of Hawking's beliefs and that Darwin is reminded of Hawking's beliefs. I think this is an important factor for both scientist. As people of their intelligence are striving to understand a wider view of the world.

Hawking's Ramp:

This ramp is completely functional, paying respect to Darwin. Connecting from the beam to the meeting space. Looking from the extended elevation, the ramp also resembles bracing ('H' section beam), supporting the cantilever above.


Darwin's Ramp:

This ramp contrasts to Darwin's space. The split levels encourage a play on feelings which is also encouraged by the varying textures along the floors, ceilings and walls. The ramp is made to encourage Darwin to forget terrestrial matters and continue his work on more important things, hence encouraging his quote.

Final - The Meeting Space - On the Wall

The meeting space combines elements from both scientists. It is an extension from the weight of the wall whilst hovering from the beams above. This is emphasized by the step down from the sequenced pergola (similar to Hawking's space) to the dark landing (Darwin). The meeting space is a transition between the contrasting labs.

Final - Charles Darwin - Behind the Wall

Darwin's Space: The dark passage, leading behind the wall, into an anchor for the cantilever outside. The passage is long, with a dim light at the entrance of the space. The darkness emphasizes the solidness around the passage and lab, implying the functionality of a heavy weight, supporting the overhang. With this the positioning of the space is made completely functional and needed in making Hawking's space possible.
The space itself, also calved out of a larger mass, is split into three different areas, by varying height of floors and ceilings. This clearly identifies the positions Darwin would undertake his daily tasks. There is no waste of time. The only light available is from a window outside. Tunnel like this window also emphasizes how deep in the space is.
This space is simple, yet efficient, connecting directly to Darwin's quote.

Final - Stephen Hawking - In Front of the Wall

Stephen Hawking's Space:
At the end of the cantilever Hawking's lab floats in free spirit (Inspired by Precedent 2). It is distanced from the remaining structure by long beams that assist the cantilever effect. The lab itself: a sequence of arches, inviting a play of light (Inspired by Precedent 1); encouraging those terrestrial matters to fade from mind.
