THE ESCAPE

My documentary emphasises porosity through the theme of liberation. My protagonists are balls that are seamlessly imprisoned, entrapped by our antagonists: soldiers and a warden. I have implied people as a coinciding element to convey porosity- they are my objects to be manipulated and tested, not tables, chairs or other lifeless items. I have tested explosions through both friction and detonations, resulting in symmetrical and rhythmic intensities ranging in size and impact.

Found Machinima

My found machinima plays on three significant elements of porosity: rhythm, liberation and symmetry. I have looked for these distinct qualities deliberately, as I intend to incorporate them into my documentary. My composition shows spectacular variations of porosity on a physical front; I, however intend to elaborate further on a theoretical medium and imply physically and metaphorically appropriate conventions.

Porosity, Bouncy Balls

This arrangement displays a seamless variation to porosity. Many of the videos I have collected from YouTube display faultless and rhythmic networks of objects. I have tried to display this here through bouncy balls that have lost their gravitational properties. More significantly, the balls are entrapped in a room that is not directly visible; that is the walls and roof are defined through the relation between the balls and their connection to the invisible surfaces capturing them. The explosion plays a significant part in contributing to the intensity inside the room. Porosity is seen here and can be drawn from Richard Goodwin’s definition of “re-negotiating spaces”; both the balls and surrounding surfaces are dependant of each other.

Porosity, Like Clockwork

I have created an arrangement that very much resembles a cog system. The barrels are the teeth that interweave as they spin. If one barrel was to explode, slow down, or lose alignment, all the other barrels will blow also; and hence introducing an element of dependency to porosity.
